Composite Sounds

Sound Wave

“A sound object (or sequence) is said to be composite if it is made up of several distinct, successive elements.”

Michel Chion, Le Guide des objets sonores, Paris, Buchet/Chastel-INA-GRM, 1983.

When creating a composite edit, you write the sound material by splicing together several sound sources. The result is sound material—or a sound object—referred to as composite.

Several techniques should be noted:

• Symmetrical (Delta) Sounds

• Attack Substitutions

• Overlays
